MB 229.51 Engine Oil

Engine oil for MB 229.51, the Mercedes-Benz specification for low-SAPS engine oils in passenger cars and vans, including engines with a diesel particulate filter. Goldenstone lists five 5W-30 oils whose product data state MB 229.51, from a 1 L bottle to a 200 L drum.

What MB 229.51 means

MB 229.51 describes a low-ash (low-SAPS) oil with long-life performance for Mercedes-Benz petrol and diesel engines with exhaust after-treatment. Oils meeting it are usually ACEA C3 or C4 oils in SAE 5W-30. MB 229.52 is the stricter follow-up specification; two of the oils below also state MB 229.52.

MB 229.51 or MB 229.52? Use the specification named in the vehicle's service documentation; an oil that meets MB 229.52 is generally accepted where MB 229.51 is asked for, not the other way round.

C3 or C4? Both are low-SAPS categories. Renault engines that require RN0720 call for the C4 oil.
